I have a question… Who do you listen to?

Okay, okay so actually, I have multiple questions… Who should you take advice from? What type of people should you follow in life and in business?

An extremely successful mentor once asked me these questions, and wanting so badly to get the answer right I said something so vague that, even if it wasn’t right, it couldn’t possibly be wrong (or so I thought)— my heart.

He laughed and laughed and laughed. I’m not sure he could’ve made it any clearer just from his chuckles alone that if I had continued to listen to my heart, which is by nature deceitfully wicked and ever-changing, that I would never accomplish what my mind so badly wanted.

So I retracted my answer, and followed his questions with a question.

Who should I listen to?

This is what he said:

#1 You should listen to people who have what you want

Being in insurance, I made it a point to surround myself with the agency owners who are absolutely dominating in the space.

Now, in less than 3 years, our insurance agency has thousands of leaders having rocket-ship like results week over week with our numbers and teams consistently growing. Our leaders are offered the top compensation benefits anywhere in the entire industry with access to all of your favorite insurance carriers.

#2 You should listen to people who started where you started

Next, I made sure to listen to those who had similar life experiences — people who were relatable to me — that then turned those mistakes and lessons into business-building assets.

Everyone in our organization at one point decided to get started, just like I had once upon a time. The only differences between you and them (or me) are:
- Time: meaning how long they’ve been an agent, and
- Vehicle: meaning which company they are contracted with

They started where you started and with the right opportunity, a road map to success, and top compensation, they have changed their financial well being forever.

#3 You should listen to people who are the type of person you’d like to become.

And this I still continue to strive to do day in and day out — to put myself in a position where I can add enough value and respect to get my foot in the door with those who can teach me how to continue to add value and respect.

We have high class, humble leaders who put their heads down and work every week like their lives depend on it. We teach you to be at the top of your game and to exude professionalism.

Remember this: you can only teach someone else how to do something that you have done yourself.
